Warrior Softball

Thanks to some late inning drama and heroics, the Del Norte varsity softball team will be making a return visit to the North Coast Section Division IV championship game, after the Warriors scored three runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning to escape with a 4-3 victory over the McKinleyville Panthers in the North Coast Section Division IV semifinal game at Del Norte High School Wednesday afternoon.  The No. 2 seeded Warriors will now travel to St Mary’s College in Moraga where the No. 1 seed St Joseph’s-Notre Dame Pilots await with the section championship on the line.  The contest is scheduled for Friday, June 5 at 5 p.m.
In a game that featured a little bit of everything from uncharacteristically shaky defense to missed opportunities offensively early on, the Warriors found themselves in dire straits late, as, after the Panthers Libby Alves hit a two-out, two-strike, two-run home run over the left field fence in the top half of the seventh inning, the home team knew it had more than a little work to do in order to achieve their ultimate goal.
Trailing 3-1 and with all the momentum clearly resting in the visiting dugout and a berth in the section championship game on the line, it was the bottom third of the Warrior batting order that started what turned out to be a miraculous game-winning rally in the home half of the seventh inning.  With out, Laycee Coopman stroked a double to center.  That was followed by a run-scoring single off the bat of Shelby Horner.  Payten Healy then singled to put runners on first and second.  After a Brook Nolan sacrifice bunt moved Horner to third and Healy to second, Tvshiina Jacobs delivered the game-winning two run single to center on the first pitch she saw, scoring Horner from third with the tying run and Healy from second with the winning run right behind Horner as the home team dugout and partisan crowd went from despair to elation in a matter of minutes.
Coopman, Horner and Healy, went a combined 9-for-12 with two runs batted in and four runs scored, while Jacobs had two hits in three official plate appearances, the last one being the game-winning single to cap off the three-run seventh inning rally.  Allison Douglas went the distance in the circle to earn the victory, allowing six hits including the two-run home run in the seventh that gave the Panthers the lead.  Douglas struck out six and walked two.
