Warrior Softball

The Del Norte varsity softball team improved to 5-0 in the Big Five Conference with a doubleheader sweep of the Arcata Tigers Friday afternoon at Del Norte High School.  The Warriors won the first game 5-0 and held on for a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.  Allison Douglas pitched two complete games, striking out a combined 12 Arcata batters and walking just one.  The Warrior defense also turned three double plays in the two games, thwarting potential Tigers offensive rallies.
Offense was difficult to come by for both teams all afternoon long, but the Warriors were able to take advantage of opportunities when they did present themselves.  After scoring single runs in the home half of the first and second innings of the opening game, the Warriors were able to build themselves a cushion with a three-run fifth.  After Tvshiina Jacobs drilled a one-out double, Douglas helped her own cause with a run-scoring single.  That was followed by an RBI single off the bat of Maddy Burchell.  Antonia Alcala then capped off the inning with a run-scoring double, as the Warriors took a commanding 5-0 lead and didn’t look back.
The nightcap began in nearly the same fashion as game one, with the Warriors scoring single runs in the second and fifth innings and Douglas and her defense seeming to have things well in control despite the slim lead.  However, the momentum took a decided turn in the top half of the seventh, as the Tigers mounted their first, and only, real scoring threat of the afternoon.  After the first two Tigers batters singled, Douglas induced a flyout for the first out of the inning.  That’s where things got interesting, as an infield error on the ensuing hitter loaded the bases with nobody out.  After a four-pitch walk forced in a run, the Warrior lead was cut in half and the bases remained loaded for the Tigers.  That would be the extent of the rally though, as Douglas retired the final two batters of the game on a popup to short and groundout to first, ending the contest with no further damage done.
Douglas allowed just two hits and struck out six while not walking a batter in the opener.  She surrendered five hits in the nightcap, striking out six and walking one.
