Warrior Basketball

The Del Norte girls’ varsity basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped Thursday, as they fell 43-38 to the Montgomery Vikings of Santa Rosa in the opening round of the Windsor Tournament. The Warriors got off to a blazing start, taking a 13-2 lead after one quarter, but were then outscored 18-1 in the second stanza and trailed 30-24 heading into intermission. Saddled by foul trouble through most of the first half, the Warriors responded in the third quarter, erasing the six-point halftime deficit and taking a one-point lead into the final quarter. In what was a back and forth final eight minutes, the Vikings took an eight-point advantage with five minutes remaining in the fourth, before the Warriors answered with a surge of their own, retaking the lead with three minutes left in the game. From that point it was a game of free throws down the stretch, as the Warriors connected on just 13-of-23 from the charity stripe, including a 1-of-6 string in the final minutes. The Vikings, on the other hand, converted 16-of-18 attempts from the free throw line in the game.
After dropping their first game of the season Thursday against Montgomery of Santa Rosa in the opening round of the Rumble in the Jungle Tournament hosted by Windsor High School Thursday evening, the Del Norte girls’ varsity basketball team got back on the winning side of the ledger in a big way Friday afternoon, cruising to a 54-16 victory over Rincon Valley Christian in a consolation bracket game. Jadence Clifton led the Warriors with a game-high 18 points, while Kaleya Sanchez and Bella Stone both chipped in nine points apiece. The Warriors will now take on the Napa High Grizzlies in the consolation championship game Saturday. Napa defeated the St Bernard’s Crusaders in a consolation bracket game Friday as well.
On the boys’ side, the Del Norte varsity squad picked up its second consecutive win at the John McMillan Invitational hosted by Cloverdale High School, posting a 52-21 win over the St Helena Saints Friday evening. The Warriors held a slim 20-14 lead at intermission before stepping on the proverbial throttle in the second half and holding the Saints to just seven points combined over the final two quarters of action. Omar Banuelos led the Warriors offensively with a game-high 18 points, including two 3-point field goals. The Warrior boys will face either the host team Cloverdale or the St Bernard’s Crusaders in the tournament’s championship game Saturday. Tip off for that contest is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Del Norte boys’ varsity basketball team won its fourth in a row, and fifth of its first six to start the season, with a 54-29 victory over the St Bernard’s Crusaders in the championship game of the John McMillan Invitational at Cloverdale High School Saturday evening. The onslaught started late in the first quarter, as the Warriors turned a slim 12-10 lead to a 17-10 advantage to close out the quarter and never looked back from there. The Warriors nearly doubled what had been a 14-point halftime advantage in the third quarter alone, turning a 30-16 lead into a 42-18 margin heading into the final eight minutes of action. Omar Banuelos scored a team-high 14 points to lead three Warriors in double figures in the contest. Damian Dowd and Judah Robinson scored 12 and 10 points respectively in the victory as well. Banuelos and Robinson were each named to the All-Tournament team.
